AI Chatbots Outperform Oncologists in Social Media Cancer Queries Analysis
In a pioneering study published in JAMA Oncology, researchers have evaluated the effectiveness of artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots in responding to cancer-related questions posed on social media platforms. The study, led by a team of oncologists, highlights the growing intersection of medical communication and digital technology, reflecting changing paradigms in patient interaction and information dissemination.
The analysis, as presented by Dr. Maurie Markman from City of Hope, involved selecting 200 cancer-related questions from public forums. These inquiries, typically made by patients, their families, or friends, sought information about various aspects of cancer – an area where reliable guidance is crucial. The study meticulously compared responses generated by advanced AI chatbots to those provided by six verified oncologists.
The primary focus of the study was to assess responses based on three critical criteria: quality, empathy, and readability. Evaluators, comprising two teams of oncologists, utilised an objective scale ranging from 1 (poor) to 5 (very good) to judge the responses.
