Elon Musk's xAI Debuts Public Beta of API Service for Developers

Pricing reflects this capability difference, with Grok-beta set at $5 per 131,072 input tokens, as against GPT-4o's $2.50 for 1 million tokens. Similarly, output from Grok-beta costs $15, whereas GPT-4o charges $10 for the same volume of tokens. It is also worth noting that OpenAI offers a Batch API option that strategically reduces costs by at least 50% compared to individual API requests.

Feedback from the developer community has been mixed but informative. Ofer Mendelevitch, a developer, conveyed approval on the X platform, noting Grok-beta's performance with a 4.6% hallucination rate on the Vectara hallucination leaderboard—a metric of relevance in assessing AI accuracy.
