Google has announced an innovative enhancement to its Workspace suite by introducing the Gemini AI assistant to Google Chat. This development aims to streamline communication by allowing users to effortlessly navigate through numerous messages to capture essential updates and discussions.

This AI-powered feature, launched in late 2023, is integrated into Google Chat, joining its previous implementations in other Google Workspace applications such as Docs and Drive. To activate the feature, users can simply click the "Ask Gemini" icon, located at the top of the Google Chat interface. This will open a dedicated chat window for interacting with the AI, where users can request summaries of group chats, direct messages, and discussions within spaces.

The "catch me up" command offers users a concise summary of conversations, which can be requested in bullet points or expanded with more detail if necessary. Users can also inquire about specific aspects of the conversation, such as requests for help, major takeaways, and other significant decisions. Additionally, it can reveal tasks assigned to specific individuals or capture what was said about particular topics.

While Gemini provides efficient conversation summaries, it is limited to organising the current chat view and does not extend to accessing emails or files in Google Drive. Google has clarified that this is an intentional design choice aimed at keeping the focus on the immediate discussion context, thereby preventing the inclusion of unrelated data. This limitation also helps minimise the risk of the AI generating inaccurate or fabricated information, known as hallucinations in AI terminology.

It is important to note that this feature is exclusively available to users subscribed to specific Google tiers such as Gemini Business, Enterprise, Education, or Education Premium.

The integration of Gemini into Google Chat complements Google's broader strategy of embedding Gemini functionalities across its platforms. This includes the potential replacement of Google Assistant’s roles in Google Messages, Maps, and various Android functions, showcasing Google's commitment to creating a more cohesive and intelligent digital ecosystem through its AI advancements.
