Microsoft Integrates AI-Powered Text Editing into Notepad
In an innovative leap for one of its most enduring applications, Microsoft is introducing AI-powered text editing capabilities to Notepad, the basic text editor that has been a staple of Windows systems since 1983. This new feature, known as "Rewrite," is currently being rolled out in preview for Windows Insiders, providing users with a suite of text modification options.
The Rewrite functionality allows users to easily rephrase sentences, adjust the tone of their text, and modify content length directly within Notepad. For individuals participating in the Windows Insider programme who have access to this early preview, the process is straightforward: by highlighting a section of text within Notepad, right-clicking, and selecting the Rewrite option, users can instantly access a dialogue box. This interface will facilitate changes such as altering a sentence to make it longer or more concise. The tool then offers three rewritten variations for users to choose from.
However, to take advantage of the Rewrite feature, users must be signed into their Microsoft account. This requirement is due to the integration of a cloud-based AI service that necessitates authentication and authorisation. The feature is initially available on Windows 11 and is being tested in several countries, including the United States, France, the UK, Canada, Italy, and Germany. This rollout comes on the heels of a recent upgrade to Notepad in July, which saw the introduction of spell check and autocorrect functionalities.
In addition to the enhancements in Notepad, Microsoft is also expanding AI capabilities to another classic application — Paint. The newly introduced AI image editing tools, which were previewed last month, are now available to Insiders. These tools include Generative Fill, which can insert an image based on a user prompt, and Generative Erase, which can remove parts of an image while seamlessly blending the resulting empty space.
These updates represent Microsoft's ongoing commitment to enriching their legacy applications with modern functionalities powered by artificial intelligence, thereby maintaining their relevance and utility in an increasingly digital world.
