FTC Targets Sitejabber in Fake Reviews Crackdown
In a significant move aimed at enhancing transparency and authenticity in online consumer reviews, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has taken decisive action against GGL Projects, Inc., the company behind Sitejabber. This follows the agency's final rule issued in August 2023, which outlines strict measures against the proliferation of fake reviews, including the imposition of civil fines and penalties.
The crux of the FTC's complaint against Sitejabber centres on the allegation that the company solicited ratings and reviews from consumers at the point of purchase. This solicitation occurred before consumers had an opportunity to receive, use, or evaluate the products or services they had bought. The FTC asserts that consumers were asked to evaluate their "overall shopping experience so far" immediately after making a purchase, leading to reviews that reflected only the purchasing phase rather than the actual product experience.
This practice, the FTC claims, allowed Sitejabber to deceptively bolster the average ratings and review counts of its business clients on its review platform. The organisation displayed these skewed ratings in search results on platforms like Google, potentially misleading consumers into believing that the ratings represented post-purchase satisfaction with the product or service itself.
In response, the FTC has proposed an order that issues stringent prohibitions against Sitejabber. The proposed order restricts the company from falsely representing or aiding in the misrepresentation of customer ratings, review counts, or claiming endorsements from consumers who have not had the chance to experience the purchased products or services. Additionally, Sitejabber is prohibited from making false claims regarding any ratings or reviews it collects, moderates, or displays.
This enforcement action underscores the FTC's commitment to rooting out deceptive practices in the burgeoning realm of online reviews, acknowledging the critical impact such reviews can have on consumer decision-making. It also highlights the regulatory body's dedication to ensuring that consumers can trust the authenticity of reviews that influence their purchasing decisions.
The case against Sitejabber marks one of the initial significant enforcement actions following the FTC's rule against fake reviews. It signals a broader campaign by the commission to maintain integrity in online consumer feedback, sending a message to companies about the importance of genuine consumer input.
While this development represents a step forward in safeguarding consumer interests, it also raises the question of how consumers can discern genuine reviews from those less reliable. Although the Better Business Bureau and other consumer advocacy groups frequently offer guidelines on spotting fake reviews, the landscape remains challenging for many consumers navigating online marketplaces.
Through actions such as the one taken against Sitejabber, the FTC is actively working to build a digital environment where consumer trust can be restored and maintained. However, the responsibility of staying vigilant towards review authenticity continues to rest partly with consumers as they navigate the vast online marketplace.
